I have administered tranquilizers on animals before as an SPCA agent. The effects of tranquilizers are seldom if ever immediate. The polarbear's thick hide would render this option ineffective. If there was a breach, safety demands that the bear stops his actions without delay. The sad truth is he probably had a riffle ( or someone else close by did). What some people won't do for content.

That was pretty crazy, but that pod seemed to be very well built and probably no chance the bear could have gotten inside, but it would still be stressful being in there!

I think of being at a zoo where a gorilla can charge the glass. On queue we all step back with a moment of fright. However the above takes it to a new level. It is not for me. Lol!

The guy seemed a bit worried about the polar bear getting on the roof of the pod, I don't know if the weight of the bear would have broke the pod or not.
